In diamond cup wheels there are normally two phases in concrete grinding. First is coarse grinding and the second is fine grinding.

As this happens, the material being cut also wears down the metal bond through abrasion. Highly abrasive materials will wear the bond faster, exposing new diamond crystals to continue cutting.
