Perhaps it is easiest to see the jobs and operations of the subconscious mind by examining a newborn infant. A newborn has no conscious mind yet; it is born with instinct and a subconscious mind.

The conscious mind is, of course, responsible for learning, analysis and interpretation of events, and general day-to-day operation in the external world. This is the mind that learns to read, to speak languages, to do math, etc.

The subconscious mind "expresses" itself through feelings; the conscious mind, through thought.  The subconscious is where all of our feelings are stored generally attached to "movies" of the associated events.

The mind as a computer analogy. Like the mind, a computer actually has a number of components that are used in the process of its operation. Without going into detail, these components actually can only do one of two things.
