North Carolina's first regiment of African American soldiers was formed in New Bern six months after the Emancipation Proclamation allowed their enlistment in the U.S. Army. A highway historical marker honoring them will be dedicated Nov. 9.

The state historic site near Sedalia and Gibsonville will host a traveling exhibit comtaining some of the items that state underwater archaeologists have pulled from the shipwreck of Blackbeard's flagship and conserved at a special laboratory.

A public program starts at 6 p.m. with the authors of the second edition of "A Historical Primer on the North Carolina Constitution." The Constitution will be on display in the State Archives building lobby from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
