A traveling exhibit displaying artifacts from the underwater wreckage of Blackbeard's flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, will be the focal point for special activities Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum in Guilford County.

Tar Heel luminaries who have died within the past year -- including Dr. Wiliam Friday and Andy Griffith -- will be remembered during the annual meeting and awards presentation of the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association this month.

North Carolina's first regiment of African American soldiers was formed in New Bern six months after the Emancipation Proclamation allowed their enlistment in the U.S. Army. A highway historical marker honoring them will be dedicated Nov. 9.

Several museums and state historic sites under the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources have special events planned (with free or discounted admission) over the Veterans Day holiday weekend to honor those who have served in our military forces.

The State Capitol and its nonprofit support group will host a public event celebrating a new book that explores the history and architectural beauty of North Carolina's Capitol building, a national historic landmark and state historic site.

The State Library and State Archives of North Carolina are supplying digital resource information for a national organization used by researchers around the world.

Gov. Pat McCrory will present awards Nov. 21 honoring contributions to North Carolina in the categories of science, fine arts, literature and public service. The annual award program is administered by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources.

The state historic site near Sedalia and Gibsonville will host a traveling exhibit comtaining some of the items that state underwater archaeologists have pulled from the shipwreck of Blackbeard's flagship and conserved at a special laboratory.

A public program starts at 6 p.m. with the authors of the second edition of "A Historical Primer on the North Carolina Constitution." The Constitution will be on display in the State Archives building lobby from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The State Library of North Carolina has provided training for local library personnel and has developed an online resource tool with links to information the public will need in applying for Affordable Care Act insurance coverage.
