The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 216.17 points at 28456.69 and the 50-share NSE Nifty rose 63 points to 8803.95.

ITC, L&T, ICICI Bank, Sun Pharma and ONGC are top gainers while Infosys, Tata Motors, Adani Ports, Axis Bank and HDFC Banks are losers in the Sensex.

ONGC, GAIL, Asian Paints, Adani Ports and Tata Motors are gainers while Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Wipro, Infosys and TCS are losers in the Sensex.

The first session of the week in the stock market is trading subdued. Close to the last closing level of the index since the opening is seeing limited downside. Sensex is currently trading at 32 points per 27 270.

BSE Midcap and Smallcap is trading in the green. BSE Midcap is 0.33 per cent each. Nifty Midcap is 0.29 per cent.

Bajaj Auto sales decline in December, the company's stock on Impact show. Bajaj Auto's stock traded 2.2 per cent broken.

Sensex down 256 points in this environment is broken. While the Nifty slipped below 7,950.

Benchmark indices and broader markets remained under pressure amid volatility in morning trade. GAIL and Aurobindo Pharma were the biggest gainers, up more than 2 percent.
