A road show helping to keep drivers safe and legal this winter by giving shoppers the chance to have their tyres checked for free is visiting supermarkets across Cornwall.

As tyre safety month gets into full swing, roadside checks conducted by Cumbria Constabulary last weekend (6th and 7th October) have highlighted the dangerous condition of tyres that some drivers continue to drive on.

A record number of garages and tyre retailers in the region are showing their support for October’s tyre safety month, which is organised by not-for-profit organisation TyreSafe, by offering free tyre safety checks to motorists.

In stark contrast to a steady decline in recent years, the number of people killed or seriously injured in a tyre related accident increased sharply in 2011 according to figures released by the Department for Transport.

TyreSafe has launched a potentially life-saving pledge on its Facebook page - www.facebook.com/tyresafeuk - that is designed to help keep drivers safe on the roads this winter.

Apollo Tyres has joined the elite league of global tyre manufacturers by becoming a member of TyreSafe.

Businesses and company car drivers needing a one-stop shop for everything relating to fleet tyre safety can now log onto a new dedicated section on TyreSafe’s website at www.tyresafe.org.

Just weeks before the start of this October’s tyre safety month, the campaign has received a further boost with the news that Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership is to become an official supporter of TyreSafe.

TyreSafe has launched a new film for businesses explaining how they can significantly reduce their fuel bills and ensure safer driving by correctly maintaining the tyres on their fleet vehicles.
