As the first algae education and production trade association in the world, we continue to promote balance between the university algae research world, private industry and investment.

Due to the decades of complaints and deep frustrations expressed by algae researchers and algae producers with the outdated Congressional Mandate requiring the Department of Energy Algae Biomass Research Grant Program that restricts the funding for algae.

Another year has gone by and again no change in the Congressional mandate that only supports algae research and not commercial deployment or commercial production of algae biofuels. This has nothing to do with the current price of a barrel of oil.

Algae can be made into nutraceutical Omega 3 EPA/DHA, cosmetics, feeds, food and bioplastics.

Algae research for advanced biofuels has sounded like a wonderful idea for decades. It has been rather profitable for universities, researchers and Department of Energy employees for over 70 years.
