Only a few weeks back, silver was the toast of the town. The metal used in numerous industrial and electronic applications had been on a nice run-up since early February when the July silver futures contract was trading below $28.00 per ounce.

Stock picking now is much more difficult than it was just a month ago, as commodity prices have somewhat deflated (particularly in precious metals) and investor attention has moved to economic news while earnings season winds down.

What a few months it has been for gold. With war worries in Libya to debt concerns in Europe and the United States, along with rising demand out of China and India, it appears to be the perfect storm for driving gold prices higher.

A lot of U.S.-listed Chinese stocks are taking it on the chin in this market. Investor confidence has dwindled for the entire sector, particularly for those companies that listed on U.S. equity markets through reverse takeovers of shell companies.

The cracks in the U.S. economy are starting to slowly show. We can’t have a government/Fed-induced recovery, as it will not be long-term, but only temporary in nature.
