The Government of Nicaragua and Xinwei, a leading Chinese telecommunications company, subscribed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on September 7th for the financing and development of the Great Canal of Nicaragua.

The Head of the Police Department of Rivas, Nicaragua recently applauded the country’s safety levels, highlighting that Nicaragua ranks as one of the safest countries in Central America according to figures of the UNDP.

The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Nicaragua and Mexico entered into force this Saturday, September 1st, with the ratification of three of the six Central American countries.

During Nicaragua’s recent participation in this year’s Sourcing at MAGIC the country successfully promoted its burgeoning textiles and apparel sector, as well as its up and coming footwear industry, to global prestigious buyers and sellers.

Nicaragua’s EXPOAPEN conference will be held on September 28th and 29th, with the objective of promoting export products and facilitating access to new markets.

According to Nicaraguan authorities, wood and wood products exports are expected to reach US$20 million in 2012, a 14 percent increase compared to 2011 figures.

The highlight of Nicaragua’s participation in this year’s August edition of Sourcing at MAGIC will be a special, one-hour seminar titled “Nicaragua's Competitiveness as a Footwear Producer”.

Nicaragua will be participating for a second consecutive year in MAGIC, the preeminent trade event of the international fashion industry, which hosts global buyers and sellers of apparel, footwear and accessories.

The Nicaraguan Center for Export Procedures (Cetrex for its acronym in Spanish) estimates the country will export around US$2.7 billion in 2012, if the calculation is correct, this would represent a 15 percent increase when compared to 2011.

Nicaragua recently hosted the ISA World Masters Surfing Championship, which brought together some of the world’s best surfers from 26 countries that participated in this international competition.
